Carol, I would run the pool/spa regularly. If you have a variable speed pump you can certainly put it at a lower speed and save some energy but the water needs to be filtered daily. I usually tell people 8-10 hrs for pools during a normal summer day. If we are having Spring type weather (cooler, not as much sun you can cut back some). Remember if you have any type of automatic chlorine generator you need to run the pump in order to get the sanatizer into the pool so daily filtration is necessary to have safe clean water in my book. Hope this helped.

Marc, You mention that you shocked the pool are you chlorinating at the moment? I would suggest a clarifier if all your chemical levels are on the mark. Floc will tend to clog a DE Filter. Also did you have to top off the pool water with well water at all, may need to check for metals.

I'm getting my pool ready for spring. It was green - dark green - a week ago. I shocked it, added algeacide, filled and started my filter. I have a DE filtration system. So the water is no longer green but is a light blueish hazy color. Visibility is only about 6-8 inches. PH and Alk tested and looks good. How would you suggest I clear up the heavy haze in the water. I was looking at clarifiers but after reading your article I'm not sure which way to go?

Laura, have you checked on your alkalinity and ph levels? Do another water test and recheck chlorine both free and total the ph and alkaline. More than likely one of those is out of wack a little.

Hi Victor, Sand filters tend to take a bit longer to clean pools than a DE or Cartridge. I advise changing the sand every two to three years but if you have had a particularly bad year where algae may have been a constant struggle its may behoove you to change out the sand sooner. Another way to help clear your pool is to hook up your vacuum as if you are going to vacuum the pool only leave the vac head at the deepest end of the pool facing up and leave it there for a few hours sometimes this helps get the bottom clearer a little quicker.
